Lacombe, AB \u2013 The 5th Provincial Carcass Competition concluded on July 24 at the Lacombe Research Station, drawing a large crowd eager for knowledge and community engagement. 4-H members and their families enjoyed exclusive tours of the facility, including the Microbiology Lab, Beef Unit, and the kill and cutting floor. Researchers were on hand to answer questions and provide valuable insights.<\/p>\n

A Day of Learning and Community<\/strong><\/div>\n

After the enlightening tours, attendees gathered at the Lacombe Memorial Centre for a lunch sponsored by Pohl Livestock. Guest speaker Cameron Olsen enlightened the crowd on the topic of feed additives and their benefits in cattle raising.<\/p>\n

Bursaries and Awards<\/strong><\/div>\n

A special moment in the event was the presentation of the Inaugural Fred Taylor Memorial Bursary, along with two Canadian Beef Grading Agency (CBGA) Bursaries awarded to exemplary 4-H members. These bursaries serve as a tribute to the hard work, dedication, and excellence these youth bring to 4-H Alberta.<\/p>\n

In a striking demonstration of innovation in science and technology, Mac Dykeman, a 4-H Canada Science Fair finalist from Langley, BC, took home two awards at the renowned 2023 Canada-Wide Science Fair. The fair took place at the Edmonton Convention Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. Dykeman’s project, titled ‘An Innovative Approach to Ammonia in Poultry Operations’, proposed the use of Prussian Blue or Prussian Blue + Biochar as bedding additives in poultry operations for ammonia adsorption.
